Child Labor History
Child labor has been happening since the United States was founded. In the 1830's some laws were put in place to restricted what children could do and where they could work. Although there were restrictions on kids working in industrial areas many kids still worked long hard days on a farms. The first state labor law was created in 1836 by Massachusetts and it required kids under the age of 15 who worked in factories to attend school for at least three months out of the year. From this law Massachusetts made another law that limited children to ten hour work days. Many states began to follow Massachusetts in making laws that restrict children from working certain jobs.
